Buenos Aires Real Estate - Español
Villa Lugano is situated in the Southeast corner of the City of Buenos Aires. It is a humble area that was born in 1908 when the Swiss José Ferdinando Francisco Soldati decided to create a town with the same name as his home town in Switzerland, Lugano, because the terrain reminded him of his home.
In 1909 a building that Soldati had constructed was inaugurated as the train station of the "Compañia General de Buenos Aires" (Buenos Aires General Company). On March 23, 1910, the "Campo de Aviación de Lugano" (Lugano Aviation Field) was open, being the first aerodrome in the country of Argentina, where, among others, Jorge Newbery learned how to fly. Next to the aerodrome, the french constructor Paul Castaibert build the first national airplanes.
Villa Lugano was an area that was considered more pleasant than other areas of the City of Buenos Aires. Its uneven terrain created the possibility of the creation of small swamps where the lovers of hunting and fishing could find such treats as wild ducks, turtles, eels, and storks.
Today Villa Lugano is a mixture of cultures and times, the big colonial houses constructed around the train station still stand as a reminder of the origin of the neighborhood, and around it you can find tall buildings built in such a way that they "stack" people with lesser resources on top of each other. There are also "villas de emergencia" (emergency neighborhoods), too many for one area, like the "número 15" called "Ciudad Oculta" (Hidden City) and the "número 20" that houses more than 2000 families.
Contrasting with these villas, there are the monoblocks, like the one facing the Castañares street, well constructed with large gardens and well taken care of with a neatness turning the area into a residential neighborhood.
Villa Soldati, also founded by José Ferdinando Francisco Soldati, like Villa Lugano was first populated by people immigrating from Spain, Armenia and Italy, who built their first houses in absolutely depopulated lands.
The 18th of October is the day of Villa Lugano.
