Villa Riachuelo, situated in the south-east of the City of Buenos Aires, is the most southern neighborhood in the city. This area with the typical low houses and a few larger apartment buildings, is the birthplace of various famous artists that have given the area a very special atmosphere.
Its colorful houses and cobblestone paved streets makes it impossible for Villa Riachelo's traditional feeling to go away. Thanks to the recycling of old, abandoned houses and apartment buildings, the area has lately started to develop into a place with more office spaces and tourist artractions. The "Premetro" (Pre-Subway) has favored the movement of great amounts of workers since it connects with Subway Line E, that ends its route at "Plaza de Mayo" (in Monserrat, downtown Buenos Aires).
In 1888 a company called "Sociedad de Tierras General Pobladora" (Society of General Lands Pobladora), was granted the right to clean the Riachuelo channel. This caused the company to establish itself in the area, and although they never actually did the planned cleaning, they opened streets and divided the land in the area that was later sold. This movement gave the area its initial burst of life, and it was called the "Villa del Riachuelo" (the Area of the Riachuelo), subsequently simplified to "Villa Riachuelo" (Area Riachuelo).
In 1905 the construction of the "La Noria" bridge was started, connection the Province of Buenos Aires with Villa Riachuelo. When the course of the Riachuelo river was straighten in 1944 to avoid the flooding of the areas of Villa Lugano, Villa Soldati and Villa Riachuelo itself, the bridge had to be moved.
Movies makers, TV producers, and play writers have all used Villa Riachuelo´s different faces in their work, creating some of the most ingenious productions that have formed part of Argentina´s history.
