Buenos Aires Real Estate - Español
Mataderos was in the last century known as "Nueva Chicago," after the North American city that was then the center of the meat industry in the United States of America. When in 1910 the slaughter houses and corrals that used to be located in what is today the neighborhood of Parque de los Patricios were moved to this area. The name was then changed to the actual "Mataderos" (Slaughter Houses) and the areas appearance change notably without loosing its feeling as a meeting point between the countryside and the city life. The area slowly got more populated with people coming to look for work in the meat industry or transporting cattle from the railroad station to the slaughter house.
Being a large, very populated area, it is distinguished by it's mixture of city and rural areas of apartment buildings and low houses. Even today, who ever wants to see a genuine "Payada" (improvised poetry) in Buenos Aires can do so here, where this tradition is kept alive like in no other "barrio."
During the '60:s and '70:s it was a place of gathering for "payadores" (improvising poets) and thanks to their great sense of community, Mataderos has been a landmark in the history of Buenos Aires as a symbol of tradition and source of work for the most needing classes. In terms of gathering people, Mataderos has always played an important role, especially in the times when politics are shaky. This is because the leaders of industrial establishments of the area have great power and crowd gathering skills. Today, it still has the profile of an industrial area, with dense traffic of big trucks, at the same time there are many middle-class houses mixing in with factory warehouses.
From 1950 onwards, the "Mercado Nacional de Hacienda" and the "Frigorífico", started to be managed by the Ministry of Economy. Also during this years the Institute of Cattle Dealers was formed. In 1952, it was replaced by the National Institute of Meats.
