La Paternal is a quite neighborhood in the central part of the city of Buenos Aires with a low population density. Like many of the older areas in the city, La Paternal is an area with low "casas chorizo" ("sausage houses" where all the rooms in the house are connected by an open gallery). The area was founded in 1904, and owes its name to the railroad station near by called La Paternal. Some say the name of the station comes from an Insurance Company that owned several lots in the area and was the constructor of many of the houses that make up the neighborhood. There was also a "pulpería" (bar) called "La Paternal" where people would rest when traveling the "Camino a Moreno" (Way to Moreno) on the way to Lujan. The real origin of the name is unclear.
Some time around the 1900 this part of Buenos Aires began to have its streets paved with stones. Later the rails for the streetcars on the Lacroze line were laid on these same streets.
Warnes Avenue is the oldest avenue in La Paternal. There, when the lands were still unoccupied, people would dump their old cars and trucks when they were no longer usable, and the area became known as the "Cementerio del Automovil" (Car Cementery). Around it, a new commercial activity was created; sale and purchase of used vehicle parts. The area had such success that it has today been nationally recognized as the place to find parts of even the most sophisticated cars, at the best price in the entire city of Buenos Aires.
The main avenue of La Paternal is the San Martin Avenue, and most of the commercial activity of the area is centered around it. Unlike the rest of La Paternal, everything near this avenue is full of taxis and "Colectivos" (buses). This high concentration of means of transport make it very noisy and full of activity even late at night.
The most well known football team in La Paternal are the Argentinos Juniors (Junior Argentineans). The club of the "Bichitos Colorados" (Little red Bugs, as they are also known) was founded on the 15th of August in the year 1905. On their fields, one of Argentina's greatest football player made his fist proffesional kicks; Diego Maradona.
The 12th of July is the Day of La Paternal.
