Chacarita is a quite area of the City of Buenos Aires, with streets full of trees, old houses, and also newer apartment buildings. Its an area with many "Departamentos Pasillo" (Corridor Apartments), which are apartments built side by side towards the inside of the property, with the front of each apartment facing the corridor that leads to the street.
These were lands originally populated by Jesuits with large "chacras" (fields), from where the neighborhood later got its name; Chacarita (little field). In 1608, during the rule of Hernandarias, this religious group received a dozen "Suertes Principales", terrain that was distributed during the first division of the lands of Buenos Aires. Through the years ten more lots of terrain where added to their possessions, making the area one of the most pleasant and enjoyable ones in the out-skirts of Buenos Aires.
Chacarita is famous for its characteristic cemetery, that faces the last railroad train station of the Ferrocarril San Martín. It has more than 95 hectares, and was constructed when the yellow fever hit Buenos Aires in 1871 and the train "La Porteña" brought to its cemetery a load of the yellow fever epidemic victims because the existing cemeteries were not big enough to hold the necessary amount of bodies. The smells eventually started to bother the people that lived close to the cemetery, and it was closed in 1886. A few years later the bodies were taking out of the old cemetery and moved into a new one, that was named "Cementerio del Oeste" (West Cemetery), but since everyone kept calling it "Cementerio de la Chacarita" (Cemetery of the Little Field), the name was in 1947 changed back to its original.
Today, the contrast between the very quiet and peaceful cemetery and the loud and busy train station is very great, and much like in Recoleta, death and gastronomy go hand in hand, and even though there is a class difference between Chacarita and Recoleta, many of the best restaurants in Buenos Aires can be found in this area.
The 28th of June is the day of Chacarita.
