Palermo Viejo is part of the neighborhood Palermo that is one of the largest areas in the City of Buenos Aires. It was originally named Villa Alvear, and was designed by the architect Antonio Buschiazzo. This part of Palermo was constructed in the beginning of the 20:th century and filled with what is known as "casas chorizo" ("sausage houses" a house with all the rooms connected by an open gallery) and low houses with only one or two stories where people would rent rooms. In the 1980:s the renovation fever hit Palermo Viejo, and many of these old house were completely renewed and are today inhabited by artists and professionals.
These days Palermo Viejo is full of cafes, design houses, "alternative" theatres, and a large number of restaurants that have given the area a boisterous burst of life. In the gastronomical center of the zone is the block that the writer Jorge Luis Borges mentioned in one of his most popular poems; "Fundación Mitica de Buenos Aires" (The Mythical Foundation of Buenos Aires).
There is a wide variety of bars in this part of the neighborhood, and at night this quite place transforms. The bars start to fill up with people going for "After Office" and Happy Hours, followed by restaurant visits, and then night clubs, all having a considerable increase in the amount of people attending them on weekends.
In Palermo Viejo you can also find the "Plaza Italia" located in its center, and the "Jardin Botanico" (Botanical Garden), the "Jardin Zoologico"(Zoological Garden), and the estate of exhibitions for the Rural Argentinean Society in its outskirts.
The other areas of Palermo are called: Palermo Soho, Palermo Hollywood, and Palermo Chico (Barrio Parque). Information about the these parts can be found in the Palermo area guide.
