Nueva Pompeya, or Pompeya as it is also known as, was named after the church named "La Virgen del Rosario de Pompeya" (The Virgin of the Rosary from Pompeya) built in 1900 by religious monks. Until then the area had been known as "Barrio de las Ranas" (Neighborhood of the Frogs) o "Barrio del Bañado" (Neighborhood of the Bathed). This was due to Pompeyas locating on lands that are subject to flooding by the Riachuelo river, where the southern limit between the City of Buenos Aires and its province is drawn.
"Conventillos" (houses where each room was occupied by a family, and together all of the inhabitants shared kitchens and bathrooms) were very common back then as in many other areas of the city. They were places where people from the country-side and neighboring nations would live when they first came to Buenos Aires and didn't have a lot of money. The neighborhoods population was characterized as being cosmopolitan, and had the common characteristic of living a religious life style.
With the law of "Federalizacion" (Federalization) of the City of Buenos Aires in 1887, Nueva Pompeya was incorporated into the Federal District, becoming part of Flores. Saenz Avenue was in that year a boundary of the city of Buenos Aires.
It was a dangerous area during the 1910´s, and the workers that lived in the "conventillos" would answer to the police with stones and bottles, making it a very aggressive area.
In 1938 the Burgos Bridge was inaugurated, the name then changed to Alsina Bridge and is today known as the "Punete Uriburu" Uriburu Bridge.
It is one of those spots in Buenos Aires that still holds a special place in the hearts of the people that live there. It is an industrial area and mainly populated by the working class. The houses are low, and apartment buildings are almost non-existent.
The 14th of May is the day of Pompeya.
