Villa Devoto, founded by the italian Antonio Devoto, is considered the "Jardin de la Ciudad" (Garden of the City) since it has more trees and plants than any other neighborhood in the City of Buenos Aires.
Villa Devoto has houses that are low and comfortable with large gardens covered with flowers and low bushes in every color, converting it into an Eden that captures its inhabitants who jealously protects it and would never change it for anything else. It is a very traditional area and the families that live there have done so for their entire lives.
The area has wide quiet streets lined with trees, and its pleasant atmosphere is quite the opposite of the rest of the City of Buenos Aires that is so nervous and packed with people.
There are many old and known houses in the area of Villa Devoto. For example, there is an old house known as the "Casa de la Villa"(Manor´s House) that has maintained its old Italian style. It is the house in which W. Huxable once lived with his family.
You can also see the "quinta" (ranch) of the English John Hall, famous for his green house He was known to have the best orchids world-wide. He dedicated himself to the trade of tea and whisky had great commercial success. He was an Anglican, but converted to Catholism in Buenos Aires. Being a firm believer, he had the first public chapel of the area constructed right in front of his house on the corner of the streets Habana and Bahia Blanca. Popular persons from the time visited his house, such as General Roca, the Prince of Wales, and Dr.Marcelo T. de Alvear. Mr. Hall died in 1936 and donated his fortune to the personnel of his residence, and his property to the University of Buenos Aires, giving them the possibility to found the botanical school. Today the Institute of Zoology and Botanical science of Buenos Aires still remains in his old abode along with the School of Floriculture and Gardening.
