Puerto Madero was named after Eduardo Madero, one of the city's retailers that presented three harbor projects, the last one was accepted by the current president of the Nation; Julio Argentino Roca in 1882.
The area has a huge touristic potential and there is a important real estate endeavor taking place. From its beginnings Puerto Madero was aimed at the future. There are innumerable projects that have the aim to deeply transform the place and above all, doing as little ecological damage as possible.

Connecting Puerto Madero with the Río de la Plata (Silver River) is the Ecological Reserve of the "Costanera Sur" (Southern Coastline), which is a green area unlike any other in the city of Buenos Aires. Located a few blocks away from the Financial and Administrative Center, it proposes a nice walk, granting the office worker some contact with nature.
The lagoons in the Reserve are inhabited by a varied fauna. You will see birds typical of the "pampas" (a northern Argentinean region), that are the most prominent species in the lands. Other animals, more difficult to spot are fishes, amphibians, and reptiles living in the waters. Some mammals, several kinds of insects and other invertebrates that also can be found.
Recently Puerto Madero has become one of the most luxurious and modern areas in Buenos Aires. Visited daily by thousands of tourists from all over the world, it is possible to see how the old docks that once stored cereal that was to be exported, now serve as the structure to support, offices, movie theaters, restaurants, banks, hotels, coffee houses, along with other projects that go along the external side of the "Costanera Sur", from Brazil Avenue to Cordoba Avenues.
